This week Freehand Profit released photos of 3 new sneakers masks, all made from Way of Wade 4s yet each mask is completely unique. These aren't the first Way of Wademasks by Freehand Profit, last December for Art Basel:Miami he created 5 WoW masks for the Chinese athletics company Li-Ning, the maker of Dwyane Wade's signature basketball shoe.
"There’s levels to the sneaker masks. The body of work speaks as a whole and each mask or group of masks also have their own voices. For masks 119, 120 & 121 they are a testament to the endless possibilities that come within even the same style sneaker. Like No. 108, the “Veteran’s Day” WoW4 Mask, these masks pull their character from the way colors and materials are applied to the shoe as well as the various base masks that I build my sculptures onto. Leading to a unique and one-of-a-kind mask each and every time.
The masks are a reflection of our modern culture through an ageless tradition, from my vantage point as a supporter, participant and believer in Hip-Hop culture. Masks create and conceal identities, they can possess you or chase the demons away, throughout history they have been used in rituals & rites of passage, others are status symbols and objects of desire. Ritual is a ghost our modern eyes look for but don’t recognize, we are unaware of our daily practice. It is said “We are what we worship”, who are you deities?" - Freehand Profit
